BOOK ORDERS ARE DUE FRIDAY - SEE POST BELOW FOR DETAIL
LIBRARY BOOKS FROM OUR LAST VISIT ARE DUE BACK BY THIS THURSDAY. I AM TRYING TO ARRANGE A TRIP TO THE LIBRARY FOR THIS WEEK, BUT IF THE SCHEDULE DOESN'T PERMIT, I WILL MAKE SURE THE BOOKS THAT ARE BROUGHT TO THE CLASSROOM ARE RETURNED IN TIME. PLEASE HAVE ALL BOOKS RETURNED TO THE CLASSROOM BY WEDNESDAY MORNING
Math - we will be finishing up our units on whole numbers and decimals this week. We have a quiz tentatively scheduled for Thursday. Assigned units MUST be completed by test time in order to earn points! We then finish up the week moving into integers. We are doing our lesson/s each day and then students are given time to do their IXL work (practice). If they are not able to finish their practice at home, they need to do it for homework! It's easy to see if they have completed it by going to IXL and seeing if the days lesson that is listed in the student's planner is complete. One of the things I am loving about IXL is the high level of achievement it requires from the student. They can't "get lazy and rush" through it. If they get answers wrong, it drops them further away from their minimum goal of 90%. Some students are finding this frustrating, but I think they will quickly adjust :-)
Language Arts - We will be starting a class novel next week, The Egypt Game. This week we will take to IXL to practice some grammar skills - commas. Using the students Persuasive Essay writing as a guide, I can see that students need to brush up on this skill. We will also be doing our final drafts of Persuasive Essays. Ending last week, each student was to get peer in put from 3 students. I will be "pre-grading" these papers using a grading rubric. Students will then have one final opportunity to edit their papers before submitting final drafts on Friday. This is a BIG project and worth 50 points. I highly encourage students to do their best work for final drafts.
Science - I hope this week to start our "aquarium project". I need to finalize details with our "parent expert" for this. We will also be beginning a launch unit called "Digging In", which includes various hands on learning opportunities.
Social Studies - Students did a Web Quest on Mesopotamia last week. This week, students will work in groups to research particular topics within Mesopotamia. They will do a poster and make a class presentation. This is a big project in Social Studies and I encourage students to do their best work. Presentations will be held next week.
Have a great week, and be sure to e-mail me with any thoughts or concerns! firstname.lastname@example.org
